KLP Design Company (KLP Design Co. for short) is more than just an additional revenue stream for Kayla Lee Photography. It is a return to basics, a homecoming of sorts.
As many of you know, journalism was my dream deferred. I put that on hold and pursued a path into education instead. I never stopped documenting, though, so I always had a camera ready to capture whatever would come my way. You might also know that I am a lifelong crafter and creator, so nothing makes me happier than making something out of nothing. I have never been much of a quilter or crocheter (too much math for me, all that counting and measuring makes me anxious); I love more hands-on activities, such as cold process soap making, sculpting, paper arts, things of the like. I also get a thrill out of using new tools and unconventional methods (I was cutting glass with fire long before it was cool. Or safe). These two sides of me connected, and created my first adventure, an Etsy shop called All Things Reconsidered.
I had to reconsider that time commitment to that shop once I enrolled in grad school. This was justified–I wanted to do well and it brought me back to my journalistic roots and made Kayla Lee Photography a possibility–but I missed making. I missed design. I missed trial and error with new tools.
So, this year when I left my day job for my dream job, I gifted myself a Glowforge and that’s what has made KLP Design Co. possible.
The mission of this shop is simple (and very similar to KLP): I want to provide couples with unique, timeless, and elegant items to make the most of their memories. Cake toppers, photo props (like hangers), gifts, and even holiday decorations are the cornerstones of the product line. They are made from modern elements (like metallics, neutrals, and woods) and feature minimalistic designs that put the emphasis on you rather than the item itself. I might be biased, but I think they’re cool.
