The universe always has a way of making things right. It knows what needs to happen, and, like a 1980s teen tilting the pinball machine, the universe will always roll every single one of us to exactly where we need to be.
Ellen and Kevin did not grow up too far from one another. In high school, they were only separated by two years and seventy miles, but their minds and hearts where in the same place (and not just in regards to their mutual love of hockey). Kevin longed to be the third generation to serve the United States military, and he really wanted to walk in his grandfather’s footsteps right to the Naval Academy; around the same time, Ellen started to have her own military aspirations. Nursing was her calling, no doubt, but she started to feel like she wanted to give more than what everyone was expecting. She had many discussions with her English teacher and speech coach about wanting to become a Navy nurse after her time at Concordia College – Moorhead.
In early 2018, that’s exactly what Ellen did, and it turns out it was a charmed choice. Just over one year later, Ellen flew to Annapolis to meet a fiery-haired Navy hockey player named Kevin. One year after that, he became her fiance. On June 25, 2021, they exchanged their vows to each other back home in Minnesota with a ceremony and reception filled with laughs, love, and family and military traditions: A grandmother’s diamond and a grandfather’s sword. The Arch of Sabers exit and a custom Challenge Coin as a favor that was paired with can koozies with an illustration of “the kids” (missing was the newest baby boy, Ruger).
It was a day filled with emotion and meaning, and it was perfect.
