As a photographer, I hide behind that camera in so many ways. One of those is when it comes to wedding reception dances–even if it is a celebration where I am a guest. I can truly dance if I am taking photos, right?
It’s not that I don’t like dancing–I do very much. When I am home. Alone. I am not someone who has ample coordination; in fact, I think I have kinesthetic deficiency without how clumsy I can be. For that reason, I tend to sit not just “this one,” but all of them, out.
There are, however, five wedding reception dance songs that get me moving and grooving…
1. CUPID SHUFFLE
Ah, yes. The one dance I (think I) do pretty well. It is the most coordinated you will ever see me on the dance floor. It’s upbeat and funky while still being slow enough so I can get my bearings before I bump into anyone (well, almost anyone…)
2. THE HORA
Jewish Kayla loves tradition, and cannot help but be a part of this and circle joyfully myself. It might just look like we’re going around and around, but like the dreidel, we only become more joyful and elated the more we move. It’s nothing sort of emotional and amazing as a wedding dance.
3. THE ELECTRIC SLIDE
Boogie-oogie-oogie.
4. BYE BYE BYE
Do you even have a DJ if they aren’t playing this *NSYNC gem? I have a hard time accepting that this goodie is now an oldie, but I love it just the same now as I did in the mid-2000s. I might be as stiff in my moves as all those frosted tips were, but I still bring it.
5. THE MACARENA
What can I say? I am a true 1990s baby. Whenever I hear this song, I am in The Big Room of the old Grand Rapids Middle School and in eighth grade again, flailing my awkwardly short limbs around to the Spanish lyrics sung but two dudes who vocally sound way more professional than the melody suggests. It is still a favorite groove of mine, especially as a wedding dance.
