I get asked a lot of questions, and often it’s the same queries over and over again. Here are five of the frequently asked questions about Kayla Lee Photography:
HOW’D YOU COME TO BE A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
So, I wanted to be a journalist, specifically a war correspondent. I love tension in an image; a good photograph will tell you everything without saying a word. I have always been captivated by images like Tank Man, so finding moments like that always set my soul on fire. Weddings offer that same sort of energy where tension can be captured (tension isn’t always bad–it’s just a form of excitement, so there’s lots of happy tension to photograph!)
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EDITS?
When I am editing an image, I am looking to replicate the Fuji 400H film stock. For me, this means I am looking at pinks and greens. I want all skin tones to be a smidge rosier and I want the greens to be a touch desaturated (I love them to appear more like olive or sage than yellow).
DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-WEDDING RITUALS?
Not really, no. I wear one of three black dresses, bring a Cherry Frost Gatorade, and show up ready to do my thing. After most weddings, though, I get a big Coke or Iced Vanilla Coffee from McDonald’s, so I would say that is my post-wedding ritual.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOS TO CAPTURE?
Outside of tension-filled images, I love a good establishing shot (again, those contain their share of drama as well). I also really love details! Portraits are my favorite part of the day, however, as it allows me to pull you (the couple) out from everyone and just let you be in love and have some time all alone on your day.
WHAT ARE YOUR WEAKNESSES?
I default to efficiency–I am not a person who likes a lot of fluff. As I shoot, I am constantly thinking “How can this picture be used?” and I make sure that it has a function, either for documentation or practical function (like you will print it or include it in your album). I want to make sure we always have enough time for your portraits, so this efficiency kicks in during family formals and wedding party portraits (I’ll make the joke that this is when Kayla Lee takes a break and Ms. LaTarte, the former teacher, shows up). This means I might not be naturally as fun during these times; I will go into auto-pilot and run through my poses and set up to be sure we functionally get these photos. However, at the end I will always ask if anyone has any ideas, and we’ll do a few more, just for fun.
