When we think of birthstones here in the United States, they conjure images of the studs from our first ear piercings or our class rings. We don’t often consider the historical significance of the gems themselves. Amethyst, for example, is noted for being sacred to Buddha and in Tibet it is a stone used for prayer beads; it has also been considered royal in the Middle Ages and used to adorn English artifacts. January’s birthstone, garnet, was a common stone during the latter part of the Ancient Roman world, often paired beautifully with gold.
These two stones received an extra special honor this past Friday, where they served as the inspiration for Claire and David’s winter Lutsen Resort Elopement. Her bouquet and his boutonniere contained a curated collection of purple calla lilies, red ranunculus amongst a purple tint, all a nod to their personal birthstones. Even her ring contained each stone as a reminder of their individuality and the beauty of their lives combined.
This day was sixteen years and nearly four thousand miles in the making. Thanks to a Google search in the early part of 2021, these Yorkshire (UK) residents settled on a March 2022 elopement along the shores of Lake Superior–even though the shore was more of a snowbank during their visit (but it was still beautiful, they insisted). They planned for a winter Lutsen Resort elopement. The lake would be their background, the iconic covered bridge their arch, and it would be perfect.
And it was.
And that bus? The most wonderful bonus.
Thank you so much for letting me celebrate with you two, Mr. and Mrs. Hill! I hope you have enjoyed your time as honorary Minnesotans! Please come back on holiday sometime!!
