If you have followed me on Instagram for any length of time, you know that I love musicals. This started way back in eighth grade music, and I am forever grateful for Ms. Moe for introducing me to theatre. It doesn’t really matter what level (high school, community, touring, Broadway…I love them all), it just has to be live and have one ticket available. In fact, I love musicals so much, I chose musicals and theatre performances over concerts every. single. time. I have only been to one concert ever, but have seen multiple shows multiple times.
Why I do love musicals, let me count the ways…
- I LOVE STORIES
Musicals are stories set to showtunes. What’s not to love about that? (This is my favorite Spotify Showtune playlist, FYI.)
- I LOVE MUSIC
Again…stories set to music. I don’t see how that could go wrong.
- IT’S FUN TO SEE DIFFERENCES
I have seen Fiddler on the Roof like a hundred times (OK, seven or eight). It has had different staging, lighting, and costuming in most scenarios–the exception being the current tour, which I have seen three times. As a drama nerd, I love seeing how directors change things up to make a well-known show their own. That isn’t achieved in movies, and it is one thing I really enjoy about live performances.
- A GOOD THEATRE CROWD CAN BE AS FUN AS THE SHOW ITSELF
When I saw Come From Away on Broadway, it wasn’t ultra well-known yet, so it was a small, intimate theatre. There were several people from Newfoundland (the setting of the production) in attendance, and you could feel how the performers were playing off the energy that crew (and all of us, really) were putting out there. Same thing happened when I saw Hairspray at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre–the stage vibed hard with the audience. That energy, that spirit…I love it.
- IT’S AN EXCUSE FOR AN EXPERIENCE
Dinner and drinks before. Cocktail at intermission. A nightcap after. Musical theatre is a nice excuse to dress up and enjoy living life. Kind of like air travel back in the day–these shows serve as a nice reason to be spiffy and have a great time out and about!
