I recently became aware about this new thing Instagram is doing: IG Reels. It is apparently their answer to TikTok, a platform I had avoided at all costs. Intrigued, however, I gave IG Reels a go…
…AND I LOVE IT. Why? Well…
1.) I GET TO EDIT VIDEO
A little known fact about me is that I rather enjoy working with video—not as much as I do photos, clearly, but it is still a hobby of mine. IG Reels allow me to do a little recording that I can then piece together creatively and in a fun manner. So far, it’s a blast!!
2.) I CAN TEACH LITTLE THINGS I LOVE
So far, I have only done one real reel: The perfect cup of French Press coffee. But I loved that I could share that with you. If I can inspire you to try something new or in a new way, I am all about that. Reels give me a new way to do show and tell, so I am living it up!
3.) THEY ARE LIKE A STORY THAT LIVES FOREVER
I do some with IG Stories, but not a ton because they seem like So. Much. Work. They only live for 24 hours, so why? IG Reels live on the platform under their own little space for longer. That seems like a better use of time and energy. I do see myself using them more and more!
4.) THEY CAN BE ABOUT ANYTHING
I can talk about photography, life, learning, travel…anything! They can be whatever genre I want, and I think that’s cool. I haven’t dabbled into IGTV yet because I feel it might be more one-dimensional, so I like how multi-faceted IG Reels already feels.
5.) THEY ARE SHORT
I am a big fan of boundaries. I feel like MacGuyver—make THIS happen using only THESE. With fifteen seconds, the narrative being told has to be short and sweet, and I love playing within that parameter. I have to teach you posing in 15 seconds? SOLD.
