FIVE FAVORITE CANDLE SCENTS

Candles. It’s more than just about the scents…but that doesn’t hurt.

One of the most interesting things I ever learned was in my first college class ever. It was Camping, and it was for my gym credit. We (the class) spent two days at the Laurentian Environmental Center in Britt, Minnesota. One of out “lessons” was survival, and it was stressed that after building a shelter we should build a fire. It wasn’t just for heat, but for company; a fire’s flames are in a way alive–they move around and require attention to keep from burning out–which when lost and alone, might make one feel a little less so.

This is why I like (certain) candles, even in this era of essential oils and diffusers. There’s something nice about a flickering flame. It warms a space in more than the literal way; it makes the room seem more welcoming and inviting and a little more alive. I love it.

What I don’t love is more fragrances. I am very sensitive to smells, and can’t take anything that is too perfumey or artificial. No florals or nothing to sweet for me. But I do have five favorites that I default to when I need a candle.

They are:

1.) SECOND AVENUE SCENTS – WINTER CABIN

I know exactly what you’re thinking. You have never heard of Second Avenue Scents. Back in the day (2010 through 2015) I was in the handcrafting business, and that included soy candles. That was definitely not the market for me (so much putzing for so little return), but I did enjoy melting, mixing, and pouring these creations. Winter Cabin was the signature candle scent and my favorite of them all. A little balsam and a little cinnamon and other harvest spices…and it was awesome.

2.) HAPPY WAX – FALL WOODS

If you are not familiar with Happy Wax, please go and get to know them after you finish this article. They are the cutest little wax bears with an innovative warmer that has a removable silicone cup. They have a fragrance called Fall Woods, which is just divine. Cedarwood, cinnamon, amber and birch make up this scent, and it is beautiful all year round.

3.) WOODFIRE CANDLE COMPANY – SNOW DAY

The quote from the company states that “Snow Day encourages indoor indulgence with winter spices, amber, balsam, cedar, and vanilla musk.” This candle scent is like a comfortable relaxing day at home with snow falling slowly, calmly onto the pine boughs outside the picture window.

4.) BATH & BODY WORKS – TWISTED PEPPERMINT

Yes, I have a natural draw to warm fragrances. The aforementioned candles illustrate that. But I do love a good peppermint as well, and I think B&BW has the best. It’s not too strong, nor is it too fake. There is a nice note of vanilla in it, which makes it a little sweetly scented, too, and I like that. It’s a good mix, and I enjoy it.

5.) YANKEE CANDLES – CRANBERRY CHUTNEY

This is about as fruity as I get. This candle scent has a little bit of the tangy berry bite with a bit of orange. It’s not too much of either, and to me it smells like the real deal. I am very picky about fruit and floral scents, but this one is acceptable.

What kind of candle scents do you most enjoy?

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT KAYLA

At home on the road. Forever-focused on authenticity and the thrilling art of creation; always found in the moments that leave me breathless and in awe.

After fourteen years as a high school educator, I stepped back through a door I thought was closed. Journalism came back into my life. Armed with a Masters of Arts in Communication, I was again challenged and prepared to tell the stories that would become history, but with a twist: It is now your legacy of love that I document. The tension I seek is that from every tear, smile, laugh, and moment of love on your wedding day.
