5 THINGS ABOUT MY KITCHEN

Living in quarantine points out some extreme things about life…things that have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Even though I have only been working from home for four days, I’ve noticed several things that, even though I’ve already knew about them, stand out now more than ever, especially in regards to the kitchen. I have spent more time in there the last few days than I have in years,

Five random things about me are

1. I DO NOT HAVE A MICROWAVE.

I haven’t had a microwave for four or five years. Mine broke, and I just never replaced it. I am now so accustomed to warming things in the oven, I had’t even thought twice about it. I also purchased this neat little hot water maker, so ramen and instant oatmeal is just as easy as if I were to nuke them.

2. I DO NOT HAVE A DISHWASHER.

Like the microwave, my dishwasher broke. I never liked it, anyway; it never cleaned the way hand-washing does. Sure, it takes more time, but I know my dishes are clean and clear. The space is much better used as a wine storage area anyway.

3. I DO NOT HAVE A GRILL.

I get this isn’t a true kitchen thing, but it came up when I asked someone how I should prepare a couple steaks. I am sure their jaw dropped when I said I couldn’t fire up the grill, because I don’t actually have one. A fire pit is how I enjoy my outside cooking. I have a little grate, a few cast iron pans, some weenie roasting sticks…that’s all I need to make a wonderful meal (including these little cakes made in orange peels…so. good.)

4. I HAVE LIKE FIVE COFFEE MACHINES

Drip, Keurig, Nespresso, Espresso, French Press. I also have two coffee grinders (one electric, one manual–the manual is my favorite), and I don’t know how many coffee mugs (I am working through them day by day over on my Instagram Stories, if you want to help keep count).

5. I LIKE CINNAMON. A LOT.

I put that spice in everything. It’s sprinkled into all my hot beverages as well as onto toast. I add it to all my breakfast creations, and I love cinnamon rolls…so that’s a given. I think I have three jars/canisters on my spice shelf, so it’s clearly important in my culinary

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT KAYLA

At home on the road. Forever-focused on authenticity and the thrilling art of creation; always found in the moments that leave me breathless and in awe.

After fourteen years as a high school educator, I stepped back through a door I thought was closed. Journalism came back into my life. Armed with a Masters of Arts in Communication, I was again challenged and prepared to tell the stories that would become history, but with a twist: It is now your legacy of love that I document. The tension I seek is that from every tear, smile, laugh, and moment of love on your wedding day.
