On your wedding day, “suiting up” might actually mean what How I Met Your Mother’s Barney Stintson always hoped it would mean: That you are putting on a suit. If you are styling and profiling a suit or tux, awesome. It is going to look so great. I do have a few tips and tricks, however, to keep you classic and legen-wait for it-dary all day long:
LEAVE THAT BOTTOM BUTTON UNBUTTONED
Just because you have it doesn’t mean you should use it. To give your coat a little more give during portraits (and really to make it less restricting during the entire day), only button the top button.
THUMBS IN OR OUT IS YOUR CALL…JUST DO IT ALL THE SAME
Some photographers like thumbs out while your hands are in your pockets; others (like me) prefer the look of the entire hand in. Whatever you’re feeling is fine and dandy, but make sure everyone does the same thing. Consistency is key here.
YOUR BOUTONNIERE GOES ON THE LEFT
There is no discussion here. Place it in the middle of the lapel (in the widest section). Pin from the back; it should go through the flowers and back to the underside of the label. This resource from FTD has an amazing pictorial guide.
PRACTICE YOUR TIE BEFOREHAND
Worse case scenario: Put it on and then just loosen it to take it off. This basically
creates your own clip-on tie that is classier and quicker on your wedding day.
CHECK YOUR TUCK DURING THE DAY
The biggest fashion faux pas I see on wedding days is those shirttails hanging out. IF you want to be picture perfect for the duration of your day, double and triple check that your shirt is tucked every once in a while.
It’s so easy to be dapper on your wedding day…but the most important thing you can wear? Your smile, as that is what the camera (and your memories) is actually wanting to see.
