When I show up on your wedding day, there’s going to be a lot of gear popping our of my camera bag. One thing you might notice straight away is two camera bodies—a recognizable digital Nikon with it’s iconic red tag on the grip, and a less-known vintage Pentax 645n, which is a film camera.
Yup, that’s right: I shoot both on your wedding day.
It might seem weird that with all the technological advancements in photography there are a few of us rolling back to the film days. I am happy to be a part of that movement, and I made my move back to film for a few reasons:
1.) IT’S SO PRETTY
The aesthetic of film is different than digital. When I take photos with my Nikon, they are gorgeous, but there’s just a special look to a film scan. They are softer, desaturated colors that are more romantic to me (especially when I use FujiFilm Pro400h film). They just look so…sophisticated. A digital photo can be edited in such a way, but it is kind of magical how a film camera can do it all on its own.
2.) IT MAKES THE MOST OF ONE MOMENT
I’ll be honest: I am an overshooter. I tend to take multiples of one setup to be sure I get The Photograph. Shooting with film is like Eminem in “Eight Mile:” You only get one shot. Whatever it turns out to be is what happened at that moment, and that in and of itself makes it a thousand times more beautiful, in my opinion.
3.) IT’S PERFECTLY IMPERFECT
There are no guarantees with film. We never know exactly what we will get when it comes back from the lab…and I LOVE that. It’s kind of like a little gamble, a venture into the unknown, a walk off the beaten path. It’s kind of like getting married: It’s an adventure, and that makes it so fun!
I am a hybrid photographer, a title I love. I enjoy knowing that I will be providing you different perspectives on your wedding day, because like your diamond ring, your love story has many different facets and sides.
