Barn weddings are all the rage right now, and that is for very good reason. They are classic, rustic, and chic; they are a great blank canvas for dang near every couple to build their wedding vision upon. They’re pretty great.
However, there are a few things you should know about if you are considering a barn venue wedding:
- THEY CAN BE DARK AND HOT
The beauty in barn venues is that they are natural and authentic; this might mean that some modern amenities, like lots of lighting or air conditioning, might not be readily available. No big deal, of course: Consider an ambient lighting (like candles or twinkle lights) and maybe have your program be a fan; both are easy peasy ways to address that concern.
- YOU ARE AT THE MERCY THE VERY AESTHETIC THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO IT
That rustic chic that attracted you to it will probably be unchangeable; unlike the more modern, made-for-weddings venues that are all things beige and neutral; barns are what they are, and might not always jive with every wedding trend. Totally fine–don’t fight it. Let the venue be the inspiration, and build around it. If the barn is that beautiful time-aged red, for example, keep colors complimentary to that and it will look amazing.
- YOU MIGHT GET DIRTY
Again, remember why you have chosen this venue: It’s natural and gorgeous. That might mean dirt and bugs. Good chances that even if it is one of the newer barn venues it is still going to be in an earthy setting, complete with fields, wildflowers, and forests, so your weddingwear will be exposed to the elements. Best way to avoid this? Plan on the bulk of your photos coming after showtime–ie: the ceremony–to keep as clean as can be until the I Dos are done and you feel a little more comfortable letting loose and walking into the thick of it.
There’s so much that is magical about barn venue weddings, and they are even more magical when you know how to make the most of them.
