FIVE GOALS FOR BEING SELF EMPLOYED

September 3, 2021

I am officially self-employed.

One more time for the people in the back: I AM SELF EMPLOYED.

(That’s me. I’m people in the back. I sometimes can’t believe I can say this about myself.)

Instead of hearing that alarm going off at 5:42, hitting snooze twice until 6 am, and then zombie-ing myself to my Nespresso so I can slather some make up on this past Monday, I woke up at 7, enjoyed that coffee in the sun, and got to work on what fires me up (a far greater energizer than caffeine). It’s not as freaky as much as it is AWESOME.

So what do I want to achieve from this self-employment? There are five goals I have for myself and my business:

START A SCHOLARSHIP.

If you know me, you know I love communication. I am a big believer that the deeper we sink into digital existence, the more important the search for truth and connection will become. For this, I want to create a scholarship for local students who pursue careers in communications or journalism

GET BACK TO CREATING.

For me, this means designing and fabricating products, and I am on my way towards this…bookmark klpdesign.co to see exactly what I mean come around mid-fall.

GROW.

I believe anyone can be an entrepreneur, but I also believe only those who continue to work on themselves in conjunction with working on their business will succeed. I have made it a priority to get out and grow this fall. I am doing so by attending Inspired Retreat with my brilliant business coach, Amber Housley.

REST. FOR REAL.

That was the first thing I noticed on Monday when I didn’t go into a classroom or attend opening day workshops: I wasn’t worried about what I had to do AFTER school, and nor was I worried about what I had to do IN school. I hadn’t realized how much of my life had become just balancing to-do lists. This is the consequence of hustle culture. When we glorify being busy we devalue rest. That’s what I had done, and it is no wonder I had been so on edge the last five years (I apologize for anything I may have said to you in that time frame).

GET BACK TO BUSINESS.

Even though I have looked forward to this moment for the last year, I still have some mindset shifts to make. I need to be able to see this as a job rather than just a hobby that makes money. I am almost there, but I do sometimes worry I will feel like I am just forever on summer vacation. By setting worktimes and office hours, I feel I am getting there!

I am hoping these five goals will be a source of motivation to make the most out of this experience. Being self-employed is definitely a gift, and it is one whose impact has no bound.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT KAYLA

At home on the road. Forever-focused on authenticity and the thrilling art of creation; always found in the moments that leave me breathless and in awe.

After fourteen years as a high school educator, I stepped back through a door I thought was closed. Journalism came back into my life. Armed with a Masters of Arts in Communication, I was again challenged and prepared to tell the stories that would become history, but with a twist: It is now your legacy of love that I document. The tension I seek is that from every tear, smile, laugh, and moment of love on your wedding day.
