3 THINGS NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT OUTDOOR CEREMONIES

Here in Minnesota, we love the outdoors. We have so much natural beauty at every turn, it is so intrinsic to have an outdoor ceremony. However, the first thought of how pretty that would be is followed by a roaring, rapid, wave of why nots and what ifs.

What if it rains?

What if I get too hot or too cold?

What about bugs and dirt and twigs and sticks?

These are valid questions, no doubt. However, there are a few things no one tells you about outdoor ceremonies that you should no before saying yea or nay…

RAIN OR SHINE, IT WILL BE BEAUTIFUL

Of all the things technology has allowed us to do, we still cannot control the weather, which is the main factor that dissuades couples from planning an outdoor ceremony. Why take the chance?

Because the reward is well worth the risk.

If it doesn’t rain, you will have one of the most amazing ceremony photographs possible!

Even if it does rain…you’ll still have one of the most amazing ceremony photographs possible–with a twist!

Tip: Have some extra towels on hand to dry off chairs. Also, have a back up plan in case of severe weather

NO MATTER THE TIME OF YEAR, YOU WILL BE WARM.

Winter weddings are not exempt from this. When you are standing out in the elements, even on a cooler day, you will still find yourself a bit toasty. It’s part nerves, part moving around to get there, part solar energy (thanks, Sun!). This is awesome–and it can serve as a sorting hat to help you pick out your weddingwear. No matter the time of year, plan to dress in layers that can easily slip on and off depending on how the day goes.

Tip: Stay hydrated. No matter the elements, water intake will make all the difference. Offer bottled water to guests as well to help them be ready to celebrate you!

DIRT AND BUGS ARE EASY TO JUST SHAKE OFF

Bug trapped in the tulle? A little dirt smudged on a suit? These scenarios will occur with an outdoor ceremony. In that scenario, be like T. Swift: Just shake it off. Yes, we strive for perfection on our wedding days, but little, minute, unavoidable details aren’t worth stressing over, and they definitely shouldn’t prevent you from having the outdoor wedding of your dreams.

Tip: Put bug spray on before you get into your dress or suit. It will make it less noticeable throughout the day, and it will protect you right from the get-go.

What questions do you have about outdoor ceremonies? Those of you who had outdoor weddings, what advice would you give?

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT KAYLA

At home on the road. Forever-focused on authenticity and the thrilling art of creation; always found in the moments that leave me breathless and in awe.

After fourteen years as a high school educator, I stepped back through a door I thought was closed. Journalism came back into my life. Armed with a Masters of Arts in Communication, I was again challenged and prepared to tell the stories that would become history, but with a twist: It is now your legacy of love that I document. The tension I seek is that from every tear, smile, laugh, and moment of love on your wedding day.
